A small business guide to redesigning a website
When should a small business redesign its website?
When the site no longer matches the business or no longer works on a phone.

Age alone isn't the reason; a five-year-old site that loads fast, says the right things and brings calls can keep going.
Common reasons to rebuild: the services, prices or towns on it are out of date and nobody can change them; it's slow or awkward on a phone; it has no clear way to call, book or ask for a quote; or the business added a new line of work or a second language. Write down what the new site has to do before anyone talks about colors.
How do you redesign a website without losing Google rankings?
Keep the domain, keep the addresses of the pages that already rank where you can, and send every old address that changes to its new page with a permanent (301) redirect.

Google's guidance for moving a site is to map every old URL to its new one, redirect them permanently and keep the redirects in place for a long time, at least a year (Google Search Central, site moves with URL changes). Before launch, list the pages that get visits and the searches they show for, from Google Search Console if the site has it. Keep what those pages say, even if the design around them changes. After launch, submit the new sitemap in Search Console and watch for pages Google reports as not found.
What should a redesigned small business website have?
A page for each main service, the towns you really serve, your phone number one tap away on every page, real photos, your reviews and one clear next step: call, book or ask for a quote.

A redesign is the cheapest moment to split one crowded services page into a page per service, since Google needs a clear page to match each search. Add a page in Spanish if many of your customers speak it. Leave out what nobody reads, like long histories on the home page, and put your hours, your area and your license or certifications where people look for them.
Why does mobile matter so much in a redesign?
Because Google mainly looks at the phone version of a site when it ranks it (Google Search Central, mobile-first indexing), and many local customers find you on a phone.

Design the phone version first, then widen it for a computer, not the other way around. Make sure the phone version has the same words and pages as the desktop one, since content hidden on phones may not count. Check speed too: Google publishes Core Web Vitals, its measures of how fast and stable a page feels, and its free PageSpeed Insights tool shows them for any page (Google Search Central).
How long does a website redesign take?
Most of the time goes into deciding what the site says, not building it. A clear list of services, towns and photos up front shortens everything after.

With us it runs in four steps: one conversation about your business, a design and every page written for you to review, changes until you approve it, then the switch to the new site with the redirects in place. Your current site stays up the whole time, so nothing goes dark while the new one is built.
What happens after the redesign goes live?
Someone has to keep it current, or in a few years it's the old site again.

We look after it every month: hosting, security and the changes you ask for, like a new service, photo or price.
Watch the first weeks in Search Console for pages Google can't find and for the searches you show up for, and fix a missing redirect as soon as it appears. If more calls come in than you can answer, Victoria, our AI receptionist, can pick them up 24/7 in English or Spanish; she's a separate service, and you can get just the website.

Don't see yours? Ask Victoria during the assessment, or call (805) 970-2936.
Will a website redesign hurt my Google rankings?
It can if it's done carelessly: pages disappear, addresses change with no redirect, and Google has to start over. We keep your web address, keep the addresses of pages that already rank where we can, and point every old address that changes to its new page. Google treats a redesign like this as a site move it can follow (Google Search Central).
How much do website redesign services cost?
It depends on how many pages you need and the features, like a booking or quote form. The free 2-minute assessment works out a firm price for the build and a monthly price, with a 12-month minimum. Your domain and the SEO setup are included.
How do I know my site needs a redesign?
Open it on your phone. If the text is tiny, the phone number isn't one tap away, it takes several seconds to load or it still lists services you stopped offering, it's costing you calls. Another sign: nobody can change it without calling the person who built it years ago.
My site is on Wix, Squarespace or WordPress. Can you redesign it?
Yes. We rebuild it on our own setup and move your words, photos and pages over, so you're not tied to the old builder or its plugins. Your domain stays in your name, and your current site stays up until the new one is live.
Do I own the redesigned website?
After 12 months, yes: the design and the words. You can own it sooner by paying the months left. The photos you send us are always yours, and your domain is in your name from day one.
Do I have to rewrite everything?
No. We keep what's still true and working, rewrite what isn't, and write the new pages. One conversation with Nathaniel about your business is enough to start. You review every page, and nothing goes live until you approve it.
Can the new site be in Spanish too?
Yes. A redesign is a good time to add it: we build it in English and Spanish, written by people, not run through a translate button.
Do you redesign websites outside Santa Barbara?
Yes. Cloud Conquer AI is based in Santa Barbara. We meet in person in the Santa Barbara area, and work by phone or video with businesses anywhere else in the U.S.
